Painting of Christ's Agony in the Garden

The Agony in the Garden

Detail: Christ in Gethsemane

Sorrowful Mystery 1 of 5.

Scripture

‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.’

Matthew 26:36–46

Meditation

On the night before he dies, Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane. He sees what is coming and, in his human nature, recoils. He prays that the cup be taken from him — and then, ‘not my will, but yours, be done.’ His sweat falls like drops of blood. To enter this mystery is to keep watch with him for an hour, against the universal human impulse to flee.
