Detail: Andrea di Bartolo, The Way to Calvary (c. 1400)
Sorrowful Mystery 4 of 5.
Scripture
And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.
Luke 23:26–32; John 19:17
Meditation
Jesus walks toward Golgotha carrying the wood of his own death. He falls; Simon of Cyrene is pressed into helping; Veronica wipes his face; the women of Jerusalem weep. The mystery is not only about him. It is also about us, walking beside him — sometimes helping, sometimes weeping, sometimes only watching.
Fruit of the mystery
Patience
