Diego Velazquez, Christ Crucified

The Crucifixion

Detail: Diego Velázquez, Christ Crucified (1632)

Sorrowful Mystery 5 of 5.

Scripture

Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!’ And having said this he breathed his last.

Luke 23:33–46; John 19:25–30

Meditation

‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ ‘Behold your mother.’ ‘It is finished.’ The last words of Christ from the Cross hold a whole world inside them. He dies, and his mother stands at the foot of the Cross and does not look away. To pray this mystery is to refuse, with her, to look away.
